Our Approach

Our approach to sustainability is guided by the concept of creating shared value: creating value not only for our shareholders, but also for patients families, communities, societies, the environment and our value chain. Value for the collective good.

Benefit Corporation

As a result of our shared value approach, we have chosen to become a Benefit Corporation: an innovative legal status that makes the pursuit of common benefit a compulsory, legally binding goal.

Chiesi is incorporated as a Società Benefit in Italy, as a Société à Mission in France, and as a Benefit Corporation in the United States.

Benefit Corporations have a legal obligation to prioritize the interests of all stakeholders in addition to their shareholders. By doing so, they can be financially successful while still having a positive impact on society.

We have included the pursuit of shared value in our by-laws and reviewed our corporate governance framework to help us achieve that.

B Corp

As a Benefit Corporation, we made the commitment to have our environmental and social performance, as well as our corporate governance framework, evaluated by using independent, credible, and transparent third-party standards.

This is why, in 2019, we were certified as a B Corp by the independent, non-profit international organization B Lab. B Corps are purpose-driven businesses that meet the highest social, economic, and environmental standards, and act with integrity and public transparency.

In order to maintain B Corp certification, companies must update their impact assessment every three years, to verify their status and update their score.

In 2022, Chiesi got recertified as B Corp, with with a B-Impact assessment score of 103.8 out of 200 and an increase of 16.3 points compared to its first certification in 2019.

Our Sustainability Manifesto

“WeACT - We Actively Care Tomorrow” is a term coined by Chiesi in 2018 to identify an extensive program designed to raise awareness and involve all employees to develop a more conscious way of behaving to have a positive impact on society and the environment guided by our sustainability manifesto.

Sustainability

We live in a time of great changes. The planet is exploited beyond its limits and its equilibriums are in continuous transformation. We are changing ourselves in the way we live and think about our society. The most fragile and vulnerable are paying the price: those who are often left behind in this rush forward.

At Chiesi we have always believed that it is necessary to take care of our planet and the people who inhabit it, rediscovering the value of mutual solidarity, as we are aware that every individual, as well as every living organism, is unique and irreplaceable.

This is why we want to make the assurance of high-quality medical research available for the most fragile individuals so that we can closely listen to and understand them as people rather than as patients.

We want to act as a force for good, promoting a conscious and different way of doing business which strives to achieve a positive impact on society and nature by handling resources in a circular way and creating a new harmony and sustainability. The well-being of all depends on this balance. For us, this is the only true form of progress.

Every Year We Celebrate Weact Day, A Global Event That Engages All Chiesi People Worldwide To Spread The Shared Value Mindset, And Implement The Principles Of The Manifesto Through Specific Initiatives And Projects.

Our contribution to the sustainable development goals

Our approach is based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations, which we consider fundamentally important as they clearly identify the priorities the society should focus on in order to ensure peace, prosperity and justice for everyone.

Chiesi is committed to playing its part in advancing the UN SDGs. While we recognise that the 17 SDGs are all equally important, we have determined that our contribution can be higher for 9 of them. The selection was made in line with our business model and the skills and abilities we are able to offer. These 9 SDGs are embedded in our approach towards a sustainable business model and were an input for the developmentof our sustainability strategic plan in 2018.
