Digital Health refers to the use of information and communications technologies in medicine and other health professions to manage illnesses and health risks, and to promote wellness.

THE VALUE OF DIGITAL SOLUTIONS

The value and potential benefits of digital health solutions are well-recognized across Europe and the world. For instance, the Asthma and COPD digital Journey in Europe Report by the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients' Associations (EFA) showcased the results of their survey conducted on more than 900 patients (suffering from COPD or asthma).

The study showed that, particularly in the field of chronic respiratory diseases, digital solutions increase the willingness among patients to embrace tools that empower them and can help improve outcomes.

OUR JOURNEY TOWARDS DIGITAL HEALTH

Sharing kwnoledge with StartUp Health

In 2018, Chiesi signed a deal with StartUp Health to solve key challenges such as ensuring access to care, reducing costs, and curing diseases. This partnership with StartUp Health was a significant step forward in Chiesi’s technology and digital health strategy, as it allowed us to combine our expertise with its extensive global network of innovative companies and partners, in order to stimulate further research and increase availability of therapeutic solutions for our patients.

This achievement was only the first of Chiesi’s strategic deals in this space.

Partnering with Kaia Health for patients with COPD

In 2020, Chiesi announced a strategic partnership with Kaia Health, a leading digital therapeutics company, to commercialise the Kaia Health Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Pulmonary Rehabilitation app in Europe.

The Kaia COPD solution consists of a mobile app-based software program, accessed via an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet, and an interface for motivational support that can be delivered by a provider such as health coaches or healthcare professionals. This app delivers comprehensive education and customised daily training sessions, along with mindfulness and stress relief exercises, augmented with human coaching support and individualised therapy.

In 2023, Kaia's COPD app has been listed in the German DiGA directory as a digital health application (DiGA). It can now be prescribed by physicians and psychotherapists and will be covered by statutory health insurance and many private health insurances.

Serving patients and healthcare professionals with Aptar's disease management platform

In October 2022, Chiesi teamed up with Aptar to bring patients suffering with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), as well as healthcare professionals, a new comprehensive set of services encapsuled in Aptar's Disease Management Platform.

We are adamant that digital health is the future of the pharmaceutical sector, and are committed to investing more in innovative technology solutions.

The partnership will leverage Aptar’s Disease Management Platform, designed to:

  • empower patients to better understand and take control of their disease;
  • provide healthcare professionals with data-driven insights to better manage their patients;
  • build evidence for emerging reimbursement arrangements in the field of digital health for asthma and COPD.

The platform offers a comprehensive set of services and solutions aimed at bringing together both the pharmacological and behavioural aspects of managing respiratory diseases; these include adherence monitoring, lung function assessment, reporting symptoms and identifying disease triggers and communication with care teams and health coaches.

The partnership is focused on Europe, with potential future expansions to other geographies.
